History of Castle Rock Real Estate
Castle Rock is now and always has been since 1874, the county seat of Colorado. The original inhabitants of the area were the Arapahoe and Cheyenne Native Americans. Castle Rock was a perfect location as it was not exposed to the high temperatures on the plains, nor was it subject to the harsh winter storms of the mountains. Locals call the area the Front Range.
Close to the Platte and Arkansas rivers, it was an excellent source of grassy plains and vegetation with a wide variety of deer, buffalo and rabbit which was important to their survival. In 1861 thanks in large part to the Homestead Act and the rumors of gold, the land opened up to white settlers. One of the first to arrive was a fellow named Jeremiah Gould, he was owner of around 160 acres just south of the landmark called Castle Rock. You can see the namesake from just about anywhere in the town. Jeremiah donated most of his land to start the new town. Lots measured out to 50x 112were auctioned off and sold to the highest bidder. Instead of gold, the settlement became popular because of its discovery of Rhyolite, a stone used in jewelry making. Once the railroad came to town, the beautiful light colored igneous rock was shipped to all parts of the country. Today the Denver and Rio Grande Railway depot is home to the Castle Rock Historical Museum on Elbert St. A school house was also built in 1874 and was constructed with two stories. A barb wire fence was used to encompass the school yard, as livestock roomed free at the time. Parents who were not in the immediate school district paid a dollar per month to have there high school aged children attend the higher education school. If your curiosity has gotten the better of you and you would like to know more about the town of Castle Rock, please contact our office for all the latest information on housing in Castle Rock Real Estate.
