The cities within the Douglas County borders are Lone Tree, Castle Rock, part of Littleton, Part of Aurora, Parker and Larkspur. That seems small if you are coming from California or Illinois where there are 10 and 20 sometimes 30 towns in one County. But Douglas County is only the 8th largest county in Colorado. However it was one of the original 17 counties in the Colorado Territory in 1861. Before that the area was part of the Kansas Territory. The county was named after a gentleman with whom they wanted to honor, Mr. Stephan A. Douglas, orator. Mr. Douglas was a very famous speaker and statesman who had on more then one occasion debated with Abraham Lincoln.

Douglas County is made up of 843 miles with 840 of those miles that is land with sparse forest of Ponderosa Pines and Aspens, and 3 miles of creeks and small streams, such as Cherry Creek and Plum Creek which lead into the South Platte River.

With the Homestead Act in the late 1860s came a wide variety of adventurous hardy people from the East. Of course some were looking for that pie in the sky; (Gold) others were ranchers, farmers, and businessmen. Once it seems post offices and railroads were established towns in the area grew and flourished. In 1865, after the Civil War and the Indians were under control, there were 3 school districts and 70 children enrolled for school. Every County has its ups and downs but today Douglas County is thriving and growing faster then any county in Colorado.
