Larkspur is a tiny town outside of Denver Colorado in the Douglas County area. It is roughly 14 miles south of Castle Rock. The population for the most part is about 300 residents, but come summer when the Colorado Renaissance Festival is in town it swells to thousands!
The town is surrounded by beautiful red rock mountains which change dramatically from the winter to the fall. Elevation is 6,726 feet. It sits comfortably on the northern slope of the Pike National Forest. Larkspur is 1.3 square miles.
The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad came to town in 1872, a post office had been established and the Governors wife at the time a Mrs. Hunt named the town Larkspur as the beautiful blue flower grew wild everywhere. The town became known as somewhat of a resort with a fancy hotel and plenty of relaxation, two general stores, post office and even a casino. It was incorporated in 1979.
Ben Quick was one of the very first to arrive in Plum Creek at Larkspur. He squatted some acreage and built a fine house of wood. Later he had built a stone house quarried from his own property. Ben Quicks stone house still stands today. He lived a long and prosperous life and was very kind to the community of Larkspur. Building the first school house and allowing Fort Washington to be built behind his home. Fort Washington was used by all the community in case of an Indian attack during the Civil War since the soldiers were away fighting.
Later on Larkspur was known for its elaborate party style and it was no surprise that Larkspur had one of the largest moonshine raids in the state of Colorado during prohibition. Today the town waits for the annual Renaissance Festivities to do their share of partying. Six weekends during the months of June and July the town opens its arms to visitors with live theater, jousting, and period costumes. Much of the money raised during the Renaissance pays for the water and sewer system throughout the year. Over 70% of the profits benefit the town.
I tell you about the history of Larkspur so you can relate to the very proud community. They may be small in numbers but large in respect of the land and their fellow neighbors. So grab your groceries at the Larkspur Corner Market on Spruce Mountain Road and settle in to wait for summer.
Larkspur also has its own elementary school and plenty of sports and recreational activities for the children.
Spring Meadow Farms is a Rocky Mountain Horse breeding farm run by a husband and wife team trying to add to the gentle Colorado Horse breed. Unlike horse traders the horses at Spring Meadow Farms are born and bred at the farm.
Opening in 1973 the Perry Park Country Club has a beautiful 18-hole course in Larkspur. It is a private club and holds a course rating of 72.3.
