The town of Littleton was created out of a need for prospectors and merchants to live while the Gold Rush at Pikes Peak was in its hey day. The small town was originally named Littles Town after an engineer from New Hampshire named Mr. Richard Little. Mr. Little was brought to the area to study the best way to get water to the small homes and farms that did not have easy access to lakes and streams in 1859. While surveying the lush rolling hills Little fell hopelessly in love with the land surrounding him. He soon brought his lovely wife and staked a claim to build on. His ailing wife was deemed much better thanks to the dry climate and all but cured her asthma. Eight years later the Littles got together with other interested residents and built the Rough and Ready Flour Mill and thus fulfilled a much needed economic base for the community. The Littles subdivided and sold much of their property and by the time the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad made there way to Littles Town it was truly a settlement with schools and churches and over 245 residents. In 1890 Mr. Little was again honored as the entire town voted to incorporate and officially named the town Littleton.
In 1902 the town of Littleton was named the county seat and was assured of a place in Colorados history. While agriculture was a steady income up until just after World War II, aerospace and munitions manufacturing started a boom in the 1950 thru to the 1970s. During the boom years Littleton added the Arapahoe Community College to fight of the depleting business district of Main Street. By the 1990s the population of this once small town was 33,661. Today there are well over 40,396 residents in the town. And while the average home price in Littleton is around $300,000, homes of all ranges can be found in this beautiful town. There are plenty of homes on the market and sellers are receiving from 95% to 100% of there sale price.
The Littleton Independent newspaper opened its doors and has been informing the community since 1888. After many changes, and owners the newspaper still exists today. The Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company located at Wadsworth Blvd in Littleton provides many jobs to the residents of Littleton and neighboring towns. With over 5,000 employees the company builds space communications satellites, launch systems and missile defense systems.
Recreation and entertainment are abundant in the town. At the Town Hall Arts Center live plays are performed by local talent.The playhouse got its name from the building it is housed in.The 1927 building was the original town hall for the city and is truly unique.
