History – Most of Colorado was at one time or another inhabited by Indians. Arapaho, Cheyenne, Ute and even one of the oldest groups, the Plains-Woodland Indians and Parker Colorado is no exception. Many early explorers passed through the Parker region including, James Pursely and later John Fremont. Early trappers and traders, gold miners, and famous scout and trapper Kit Carson also came through Parker. As gold was being discovered early in the 1800s, Alfred Butters established a Post Office in the Pine Grove area.

During 1859 thousands of adventuring settlers occupied the region. Homes sprung up around the Cherry Creek and the focus turned to owning land. The Butters Post Office changed hands many times before Mr. James Parker bought it in 1874. By then the building had been moved and was called the “20 Mile House” because of its location, twenty miles from the big city, Denver. Not only could you receive mail here and post messages to family members, provisions, lodging and trade were now a part of the 20 Mile House. Parker expanded it even further by adding a blacksmith shop and general store. The 20 Mile House was now the official post office in Parker.

Mr. Parker also paved the way for the railroad, telephone lines and when his child reached school age, built a school house and paid the teacher. Many of the first families were Scandinavian and started dairy farms and were able to irrigate crops close to Cherry Creek. There are still some family descendants in Parker today. The cemetery where James and his wife along with many other first families are buried, is still maintained in Parker. The town was incorporated in 1981 with a total of 285 residents. Ten years later the town had gone from 1 square mile to 13 and the population increased to over 45,000.
